About this place
A set meal, with its main dish, rice, warm soup, pickles and a little something extra arranged on a tray, has a dependable way of making a meal feel restorative. Just east of Kiba Station, along Eitai-dori, Akitaya is a relaxed, counter-led diner for straightforward Japanese lunches and dinners.
The menu offers familiar dishes to suit everyday appetites: chicken tempura with ponzu, which balances tender meat with a light, tangy sauce; crisp, savoury fried horse mackerel; Japanese beef mince cutlets; and mackerel slowly simmered in miso. Many set meals come with a bowl of hearty pork soup, a welcome part of the meal.
A choice of one small side dish with each set meal adds another pleasing detail. Options include ham and egg, a favourite with regulars, flavourful simmered daikon, chilled tofu, Chinese cabbage kimchi and whitebait. The selection lets diners tailor the meal to their mood. Rice portions can also be adjusted to suit the generous servings of side dishes.
In the evenings, solo diners settle in naturally for a quiet meal at the end of the day, with fried dishes or grilled fish alongside bottled beer or shochu. The compact interior has a touch of Showa-era character, and the simple pleasure of leaving with a full stomach is part of the appeal.
